Our failing schools. Enough is enough!

Education advocate 'Geoffrey Canada'  in TED talk.

"The testing that we do....is in April. You know when we’re going to get the results back? May be July, may be June. And the results have great data. They tell ‘Raheem’ really struggles, could not do two-digit multiplication---so great data, but you’re getting it back after school is over. And so, what do you do."
"Why, why, why does our education system look so similar to the way it did 50 years ago?"
what to you say?

Teachers need real feedback

Bill Gates "with no feedback, no coaching, there’s just no way to improve, even great teachers can get better with smart feedback"

What to you say?

Quadcopters

A small group of young people who are able to understand the principles of nature are able to create a astonishing devise.
Education means not getting certificates, but getting knowledge.
At TEDGlobal, Raffaello D'Andrea demos his flying quadcopters:

Robots that think like athletes, solving physical problems with algorithms that help them learn. In a series of nifty demos, D'Andrea show drones that play catch, balance and make decisions together -- and watch out for an I-want-this-now demo.

How we read each other's minds

Sensing the motives and feelings of others is a natural talent for humans. But how do we do it? Here, Rebecca Saxe shares fascinating lab work that uncovers how the brain thinks about other peoples' thoughts -- and judges their actions.

" How can we know ..other people have mind"
" why it is so hard to change what some body wants or believes?
" as a teachers and as a spouse i confronted with this problem every day"

Cow operates handpump to drink water

In my opinion this ‘cow’ observed the water source. Understood that human are swinging  the handle to get water. May be analysed how it will get, either using front legs or tail, but using its previous experiences might thought better use the head and horns. Implemented to get the results.
If it is able to teach this to its folks or to its cub, it will generate knowledge in its society.
As someone said, "learning is a natural phenomenon, making it a systematic process is major aim of education. Converting what it learned into knowledge is the basic challenge of the society”

Watch this video and offer you feed back.

How I built a windmill

When he was just 14 years old, Malawian inventor William Kamkwamba built his family an electricity-generating windmill from spare parts, working from rough plans he found in a library book.

Invention that made peace with lions

In the Masai community (Kenya) where 13-year-old Richard Turere lives, cattle are all-important. But lion attacks were growing more frequent. In this short, inspiring talk, the young inventor shares the solar-powered solution he designed to safely scare the lions away.

Don't forget observation and understanding many time leads interest in a invention. Is that the meaning of education?

How we found the giant squid

Edith Widder combines her expertise in research and technological innovation with a commitment to stopping and reversing the degradation of our marine environment.

Humankind has been looking for the giant squid (Architeuthis) since we first started taking pictures underwater. But the elusive deep-sea predator could never be caught on film. Oceanographer and inventor Edith Widder shares the key insight -- and the teamwork -- that helped to capture the squid on film for the first time.

Look at the unknown underwater world, how science, technology and  enthusiasm make things possible.

A 3D atlas of the universe

This is a virtual tour video of universe in 3D.
Created by ‘Carter Emmart’ director of Astrovisualization at the American Museum of natural History coordinating with scientist and programmers over 12 yrs of time.
Please watch this wonderful video to understand as humans how small we are and also to charm how great we are to explore the universe/nature.

May be someone, somewhere in the universe looking at us amazingly and thinking ‘how these hopping monkeys from forests evolved to jump into the space’

Sun and Earth's Magnetism

Look at this video presented by History channel.
Understand how sun a major source of existence of life on earth also threatens it.

Look at the satellite images of earth magnetic field to understand how we are protected by it and how the natural wonders like ‘aura’ are caused by it.

Balance

Nature is highly balanced..a small disturbance in the system can create a collapse. Life as a small part of nature is highly balanced. look at the video...

P.S. I don't know the source of this video...but from net i got it. I humbly like to state i have not stolen it....

The girl who made the world silent for five minutes

This girl "Severn" from Environmental Children, Canada organisation participated in UN conference and silenced the world.

"I am fighting for my future, losing my future is not like losing election and few points on stock market.
I am here to speak for all generations to come."

Accent Problem

Language and accent problems are part of world.
Many times we feel of it. This is funny video, with in my knowledge created by BBC one.

Please watch this, learn and laugh.

Amazing Precision

A video of Japanese students walking amazing precision in accurate

timing and movements...

Just to know training and participation.....more importantly

determination. I am sure it is not possible in a single day

participation or practice. It is, in my opinion, decision to perform

and learn from mistakes.

Leadership

Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Former President of the Republic of

India, on the quality of leadership.

Simple with a great example of failure and success and how his

leader at that time, Dr. Sathish Dhawan, another great scientist of

India responded. watch this video

Mimicking the nature

Specifically the people in developing countries are looking for solutions for environmental problems. Water scarcity and disappearing small streams are a worrying factor. However Allen Savory environmentalist created a natural way- “Mimicking the Nature”.

"Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert," begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it's happening to about two-thirds of the world's grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes -- and his work so far shows -- that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert.

Change

Unknowingly we create fear of failure in the mind which restrains us not to try. But watch this presentation by  Regina Dugan, then director of DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. In this breathtaking talk she describes some of the extraordinary projects -- a robotic hummingbird, a prosthetic arm controlled by thought, and, well, the internet -- that her agency has created by not worrying that they might fail.
"Scientists and engineers change the world"
"What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?"
“The path to truly new, never-been-done-before things always has failure along the way.”

“We think someone else, someone smarter than us, someone more capable, someone with more resources will solve that problem. But there isn't anyone else.”

Future Education

See how Corning's highly engineered glass, with companion technologies, will help shape our world. Take a journey with our narrator for details on these technologies, answers to your questions, and to learn about what's possible -- and what's not -- in the near future.

Every kid needs a champion

Rita Pierson, a teacher for 40 years, once heard a colleague say, "They don't pay me to like the kids." Her response: "Kids don't learn from people they don't like.'" A rousing call to educators to believe in their students and actually connect with them on a real, human, personal level.

Underwater Astonishments

David Gallo shows jaw-dropping footage of amazing sea creatures, including a color-shifting cuttlefish, a perfectly camouflaged octopus, and a Times Square's worth of neon light displays from fish who live in the blackest depths of the ocean.

The beautiful Matematics of Coral

Margaret Wertheim leads a project to re-create the creatures of the coral reefs using a crochet technique invented by a mathematician -- celebrating the amazements of the reef, and deep-diving into the hyperbolic geometry underlying coral creation.

The difference between winning and succeeding

With profound simplicity Coach John Wooden in his TED talk urges us all to pursue the best in ourselves. In this inspiring talk he shares the advice, quotes poetry and remembers his father's wisdom.

Do schools kill creativity?

Sir Ken Robinson makes an entertaining and profoundly moving case for creating an education system that nurtures (rather than undermines) creativity.  Watch this video...
